Excel Tip - Apply borders with the keyboard

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to quickly apply a simple outline border to a cell or range in Excel without using the toolbar?  Let’s have a go, we will apply borders to each of the cells B6 through to B11 in the example below…

 

  • Open a sheet that contains data to apply a border around, or type the example above on a new sheet
  • Click in a single cell, in this example, B6 on the text “Accounts”
  • On the keyboard, press CTRL SHIFT & and a border around B6 will appear:

 

  • Click on B7 and repeat CTRL SHIFT & and a border around B7 will appear

 

  • Repeat the keyboard combination of CTRL SHIFT & on each cell that requires a border:

 

  • To remove borders using the keyboard, select a cell and press the keyboard combination of CTRL SHIFT _ (underscore)

 

Quick and easy borders without having to use the Excel ribbon tools.
