Excel - Introduction to basic formula and functions

Overview

To become an effective user of Excel and to get the best out of your data and calculating totals this course is for you.

The magic of Excel lays in the use of formulas and how to fix or leave them moveable.

During this hands on session, you will gain valuable skills about how to create different types of calculations using formulae and functions.

Required knowledge or experience:

This session is designed for new users to Excel spreadsheets or for those who would like a refresher on the basics. It is essential you have hands on practice of using a computer and mouse.

Learn how to:

  • Use arithmetical operations to create simple calculations including percentages
  • Create simple formula using brackets
  • Use quick functions to calculate the Total, Mean, Highest and Lowest of a range of data
  • Use moveable and fixed cells in calculations
  • Automatically fill a range of cells with a series of data
  • Edit and interpret existing spreadsheet data

Excel - Conditional Formatting

Overview

Conditional Formatting is the process of formatting cells based on a set condition (rule). Thus when the condition in the cell is met, the cell takes on a specific pre-defined format. This makes Conditional Formatting a good way of visualising Excel data.

Required knowledge or experience:

This session is designed for users who are familiar with using Excel and are able to create, edit and print Excel spreadsheets.

Excel - Create and use Range Names

Overview

Range Names can be used to represent specific cells or ranges of cells, to make referencing them more accurate. Named cells/cell ranges are Absolute by default. Any cell in a worksheet can be named and that name used as a reference in formulas. For example: refer to a cell as VAT instead of B4. Once a name is set up in a workbook, it can be easily updated and managed.

Required knowledge or experience:

This session is designed for users who are familiar with using Excel and are able to create to create basic formulae, and Absolute Cell Referencing.

  • Define named cell ranges
  • Edit and delete named ranges
  • Use named ranges in formulae
  • Create a dynamic named range

Excel - Create formulae using the VLOOKUP function

Overview

Excel LOOKUP functions search for a value located in the original table and returns a required value from a column or row of another table that you specify. The VLOOKUP function can also incorporate other Excel functions such as IF and MATCH to increase its calculating capability.

Required knowledge or experience:

This session is designed for users who are confident creating Absolute References formulas and range names, and using the IF Function.

Learn how to:

  • Create a formula using the VLOOKUP function
  • Create a VLOOKUP formula that uses Named Ranges
  • Create a VLOOKUP formula that also includes an IF function
  • Create a VLOOKUP formula that also includes a MATCH function

Excel - Analyse data using PivotTables

Overview

The PivotTable feature is one of the most sophisticated components in Excel and can be described as a dynamic summary report generated from a database. The reason for using the PivotTable feature is to manipulate data, large or small in size and transform it into a meaningful presentation of data.

Required knowledge or experience:

This session is designed for users who are very confident creating range of data or Table data, Sorting and Filtering data, and using Functions such as, SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, and COUNT.

  • Setup a database table

Excel - Charts and Sparklines

Overview

Deciding what data to chart needs careful thought as it is easy to produce charts which really mean very little and not what you intended at all. Excel offers a wide variety of charting options both in two and three dimensional formats. Charts can also be easily formatted or customised as required.

A Sparkline is a small chart displaying one series of data in a single cell. It can be used to show trends in your data such as minimum and maximum values.

This session is designed for users who are confident using Excel and creating spreadsheets.

Word - Create a Mail Merge

Overview

Mail Merge is used to create a set of documents, such as a letter, mail shot or a form that is sent to many customers. Each document has the same kind of information, yet the content is unique. For example, in letters to your customers, each letter can be personalised to address each customer by name, and to add other unique information.
